Chun-Tzu Chang 張君慈

from Taiwan, lives and works in Germany

Chang's work focuses on public space. She observes the relationship between the individual and the group in the context of evolved economic structures. Trained as an architect and working in architectural practice in Hamburg, she approaches public space from within the systems that produce it — planning procedures, land value, and the design decisions that precede inhabitation.

In 2018, she explored the regional design plan in urban development of Berlin in two film projects. "The Parable" is an experimental photographic film. In "The Speculation," she herself performs forms of land speculation, drawing on Marx's thinking. Through symbolic warning, the performance visualizes how capitalist practices within an existing welfare state produce spatial scarcity and escalating rents.

Since 2019, Chang has been exploring the theme of 'home.' She looks at the individual's identification with the homeland and the mechanisms by which state agencies manipulate this perception to promote loyalty. The exploration is grounded in her personal memories, which she contrasts with official narratives and ideals. She uses everyday objects, photography, and her own body to reflect the structure of power in public space.
